QUOTE OF THE DAY

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment." - John F. Kennedy

  1. "There are two principal parts of each personality: the conscious mind and the unconscious, and these are split and dispersed, in most of us, in countless ways and directions. The function of music, like that of any other healthy occupation, is to help to bring those separate parts back together again. Music does this by providing a moment when, awareness of time and space being lost, the multiplicity of elements which make up an individual become integrated and he is one." john Cage

  2. Thanks for the wonderful John Cage quote, verus. Cage was a visionary.

One of my favorite introductions to the world of John Cage is the unique tribute album, A CHANCE OPERATION http://www.allmusic.com/album/a-chance-operation-the-john-cage-tribute-mw0000306344 which features 23 performances by various artists including Zappa, Ono, Laurie Anderson, John Cale, etc. which are divided into over 85 tracks meant to be played in a DVD player on shuffle to create a whole new musical event. When I firstheard it I was reminded of Julio Cortezar's experimental novel Hopscotch and William Burroughs cut-ups. Concept as art. Love it.
